when i was 19 i took part in the youth volunteer program Katimavik, where i got to live and volunteer in a small southern Ontario town.
my work placement was with the public works department, and one of the tasks was cemetery maintenance.
the first meaning of this song is my first glimpse of the routines of dealing with one's death through my experience of digging a large hole in the ground, then sitting at a distance as the internment ceremony finished, and then return to replace the dug up soil.
the other meaning is how you can dig yourself in a hole if you aren't careful with someone else's trust.
