When the factory closed and took my job, I was seven years on the line.
Out of school, was the only work I'd tried.
The Promise of a paycheque and the permanence of life.
The kids came first, then she became my bride.
So I put my hands in labour, I was feeding upon the flames.
The work was far between, the snow was few.
Then I fell upon the ice, I was filled with this burning pain.
There ain't a whole lot here I can do.
When I reached out my hand, the writing was on the wall.
Saying we can't even help ourselves, there ain't no hope at all.
So tell your momma that I'm still her man.
Tell her I'll be home as fast as I can.
I hope to God she don't wait up for me,
While I waste my life down on River Street.
Then I found ungrateful offers, and I use it everyday.
The little light my eyes can see if faint.
My life is now in shambles, little pieces everywhere.
You never would mistake me for a saint.
But when I reached out my hand, the writing was on the wall.
Saying we can't even help ourselves, there ain't no hope at all.
So tell your momma that I'm still her man.
Tell her I'll be home as fast as I can.
I hope to God she don't wait up for me.
While I waste my life down on River Street.
