about

this song is about someone in the winter of their years.
someone who has worked hard and seen danger and calm.
if this whole album has a theme, it would be death and living on from that end. this song confronts the theme head on.
the maritime feel recalls the life of a sailor, and every year there are many lost at sea.
when they have given so much of their living time to the sea, and so much has been given back to them from that, when their life has to end there can only be one place for them to go.
and finally the last line recalls the opening song. we all die and we all carry on.

lyrics

i once drove a thousand miles/
i once rowed a splintered oar/
i once dug the deepest depths/
to find what i longed for

never waver in my task/
never held a thought unsure/
never pain in mind or back/
but never anymore

when i'm carried to earth below/
when i'm carried on mountains high/
when i'm carried on the wind/
won't you carry on when i die
